At least ten people were killed Saturday, victims of floods caused by heavy rains in the south-west of Haiti.

Haiti endless suffering. After the terrible earthquake that has killed 225,500 people, the country was hit Saturday by severe flooding due to heavy rains. The provisional toll is ten dead. Five people died when a vehicle overturned at Jelly, near the town of Les Cayes (160 km south of Port-au-Prince), and two others were swept away by a swollen river at Pont l'Islet, said Senator Francky Exius.

A local journalist contacted had already reported two people swept away by a swollen river, which could be the same. "The situation is serious across the region, most houses are flooded and people are forced to abandon or climbing on roofs," testified the Parliamentary Cayes. Exius explained that the hospital of the city, the third of Haiti's population, was flooded and that patients had to be moved. "I had myself abandoning the city covered with water," testified the parliamentarian.

A public thank you to the weather

A local member of Parliament, Guy Gerard George, said his side three deaths in the region Torbeck, a town near Les Cayes. "The southern route was badly damaged by waters that have raised the asphalt in places. Most homes are abandoned, "he describes. "Only after the rain we can try to count the victims of these storms," said MP George.

The Directorate of Civil Protection in Port-au-Prince had previously reported a death Baradere near Les Cayes, where the water rose up to 1.5 m, without knowing whether that victim is among those recognized by parliamentarians. Many neighborhoods in the city of Les Cayes, the third town in the country which had been spared by the earthquake of January 12, are also under water, had said the Haitian civil protection. "The prison in the city of Cayes is under 50 cm of water. Haitian police and peacekeepers of the UN were forced to evacuate nearly 500 inmates including 18 women, "the source said.

These floods could predict the events that await Port-au-Prince with the onset of the rainy season in a few weeks, leaving much of the population to thank you from the elements.
