SAO PAULO (AP)—Brazilian tourism officials say 300,000 people will be taught English and Spanish to welcome visitors during the 2014 World Cup.
The tourism ministry says it plans to spend $8 million in a program aimed at teaching both languages to employees at hotels, bars, restaurants and other people who will be in contact with visitors.
Tourism Minister Luiz Barretto told the official Agencia Brasil news service Monday that “it is fundamental” to improve the nation’s ability to receive tourists during the tournament.
In addition to hosting the 2014 World Cup, Brazil is also bidding to have Rio de Janeiro host the 2016 Olympics
