33 Haitian children en route to Paris

FORT-DE-FRANCE (AFP) Thirty-three Haitian children adopted by French families who left Friday to 6:56 (11:56 in Paris) Martinique airport where their plane had stopped between Port-au-Prince and Paris, said AFP Prefecture of Fort-de-France.

These children, aged 1 to 6 years, arrived in the night from Thursday to Friday (to 02:00) in Martinique aboard an Airbus A310 in the colors of the French Republic.

During the stopover lasts approximately five hours, they were supported by staff including civil protection.

They would arrive Friday at the Paris airport Charles de Gaulle (Terminal 3) and be delivered to their adoptive families.

They are all healthy, except for a small boy suffering from diarrhea, and have a Haitian passport with the surname of the adoptive parents. They usually have several names, the latter being constituted by the name of Haiti.

The Minister of Overseas France, Marie-Luce Penchard, confirmed on LCI that "there will be another aircraft in the coming hours" for children whose adoption record is "finalized". She did not say how many.

Ms. Penchard recalled that the Government had decided to repatriate in France the children whose adoption records were "mature" and had "been an instruction to the end".

"We must be prudent, even if the Foreign Ministry will ease, speed up the process because we must protect these children," she also said.

The group "SOS-Haiti-adopted children" said Friday that France would "really go faster," like other countries in the repatriation of children because of "health emergency".

The Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, had said Wednesday that 904 cases of Haitian children are registered by the French department of adoption, including 276 in the trial stage by the Haitian authorities.

"They, the 276, we will repatriate them in France as soon as possible, ie immediately, and others, we will deal one by one with the necessary attention," he said.
